Thirteen

The tap on the driver’s side window of my car flung me straight back into full panic mode, and I whipped my head around. The look of concern on Gideon’s handsome face peering through the glass almost made me cry.

He tugged on the handle, but the door wouldn’t budge. I hurried to click on the button to unlock it. He pulled the door open wide, sending a gust of fresh evening air rushing in.

“Gideon,” I managed as I launched myself out of the car, and he pulled me tightly against him.

He stroked my hair, and I sensed his worry fading. “You’re okay, my lovely. Thank the stars, you’re okay. What happened?”

Nicole joined us, and he released one of his arms from me and wrapped it around her shoulders. “You’re both shivering. Tell me what happened.”

I swallowed the emotions that fought to be free. “A ghost. Herman Huber’s ghost.”

He exhaled deeply. “Only a ghost then.”

Nicole blinked fearful eyes. “He’s not just a ghost. He’s a werewolf, too. Was a werewolf. And he’s haunting his house.”

Gideon glanced between us both. “Is he not allowed to do that?”

I shook my head, but Nicole answered. “Jocelyn wants Daisy to get rid of him.”

He turned to me and gazed into my eyes. “What’s this? Why you?”

The longer I stared at him, the more I realized we were unharmed, and my fear dissipated. “It’s part of my new calling with the coven. I’m in charge of Peace and Prosperity.”

A half-smile curved his mouth. “Is that so?”

I frowned. “What?”

His smile fully blossomed then. “You’re in charge of keeping the peace?”

He might have thought it was humorous, but I didn’t. “I wouldn’t exactly say that.”

He nodded and tucked in the smile on his face, but amusement still twinkled in his eyes. “Please explain then.”

I shook my head and pulled from him. He released Nicole as well. “I think I need a drink first,” I said. “We’re supposed to meet Aeri at Orla’s bar.”

Nicole glanced up at him. “Why don’t you come with us?”

Gideon shifted his gaze to me as if he wanted my approval. I smiled, feeling so much better than I had only minutes ago. “Join us.”

He dipped his head. “Okay, then. I’d be delighted.”

Orla’s Spirits was a block off Main Street, housed in an old warehouse that had been abandoned for years. Apparently, the ghosts of two men who’d been killed in an accident shortly before the company shut down still liked to harass the staff when the place was quiet. There had been a few times when I’d felt a presence or someone brush the back of my arm when no one was nearby, but I’d never experienced anything at Orla’s like what I’d found at the Huber House.

When we walked through the door, I’d expected loud music to greet us, but it appeared the Whistling Thistles were currently on break and only background music played.

Being there reminded me of my younger years when I come more often. Orla Wells had decorated the welcoming bar with mahogany and glass with silver accents.
